In an historic vote that fundamentally alters the competitive structure of local high school sports, officials from Bucks and Montgomery counties’ predominant sports league voted Tuesday to organize based largely on geography, as opposed to enrollment.

Eighteen of the Suburban One League’s 24 voting were in favor, with six — Abington, Central Bucks West, Hatboro-Horsham, Quakertown, Springfield-Montco and William Tennent — voting against.

Opposition to the measure centered on concerns about whether smaller-enrollment schools could be competitive in conferences that will include much larger schools — especially for football.

As it does currently, the league will break down into three conferences called National, Continental and American. The general makeup of those conferences for the 2008-09 and 2009-10 school years will be as follows:

• National — Abington, Bensalem, Council Rock North, Council Rock South, Harry S Truman, Neshaminy, Pennsbury, William Tennent.

• Continental — Central Bucks East, Central Bucks South, Central Bucks West, Hatboro-Horsham, North Penn, Quakertown, Pennridge, Souderton.

• American — Cheltenham, Norristown, Plymouth Whitemarsh, Springfield, Upper Dublin, Upper Merion, Upper Moreland, Wissahickon.
